I discovered PowerDesk Pro several years ago and wouldn't use anyting else--until now (version 7). As soon as it came out, I upgraded to v. 7. But then I started having problems (mostly with the display) and emailed support for help. Turns out they don't support Vista 64-bit. If I had known that, I wouldn't have upgraded.

Notice that the Reviews & Testimonials (above) are from 2006 & earlier. If you don't have a 64-bit computer & don't expect to get one, then this is a great app.

I just purchased PowerDesk 7 with the $29.95 rebate, but when I go to the rebate link, I get the following message:

The link supplied to you is either invalid or the rebate has been discontinued. If you feel you have received this message in error, contact the manufacturer of the product for which you received this rebate.

    Please advise.

I was a long time user of PowerDesk Pro from versions 4 through 7 when it first came out, purchasing several licenses and updates. At one time PD Pro was the best multi-pane file explorer replacement around. Somewhere along the way, the license was locked down to the point that I couldn't even reinstall the application after reinstalling the OS on the same computer. An online license check claimed it was "already in use on another computer". I never got an answer to a support inquiry, and the online knowledge base is virtually useless. With no support for 64-bit computers, its obvious this great little program is now an afterthought. As mentioned above, if you're still on a 32-bit platform, its a good deal, especially at $10. Just don't expect support, and know you'll only be able to install it once. Otherwise, take a look at the freeware alternatives as there are some good ones out there.

I have used PowerDesk since version 1--it came on a floppy disk and as I recall, I paid fifty bucks for it. I even have the manual for it.

I did beta testing on a couple of the early versions- Fix-It utilities, too. Back then they gave us a free copy for doing the testing.

I have used all versions from 1 thru 7. They just get better.

Still using both programs and couldn't get along without them.

I had the same experience as Tom D. Although I had been a paying customer for many years, PowerDesk now "phones home" each time it starts to verify the serial number. I installed the application on my desktop and two laptops (after one died) and Avanquest blacklisted my legitimate serial number. Now the program does not work on ANY of my computers. Until Avanquest adopts a more reasonable licensing scheme I do not recommend purchasing this product. There are free or low cost alternatives from other publishers who are more consumer friendly.

Same experience as Michael Crosson above.
I bought & installed PD-Pro 7 on 2 computers. Worked fine for awhile, then stopped working, saying same serial number installed on another computer.

I uninstalled both computers, purged all mention from registry, and tried reinstalling on one of them. No dice; refuses to work.

So, if Avanquest corrects this and allows me to reinstall PD-Pro7 on one computer, I will buy another legal copy. If not, O will look for another file manager, and will also switch from System Suite to the IOLO competing product when comes time to renew antivirus.

I have also had a problem when I un-installed and then reinstalled on another machine.
Pity a great product has such poor customer service. I have got version 7 on one machine and would buy additional; copies if they allowed a upgrade/multiple purchase discount.
Have switched to XY Explorer http://www.xyplorer.com/ Not quite as good as PowerDesk but MUCH easier to deal with

I got a new computer and want to transfer the license for Powerdesk Pro 8.0 from the old machine to the new.  How do I do that?  I installed PD 8.0 on the new machine and when I run it I get a message that the same serial number is in use on another computer.

    Thanks.

I see that AVANQUEST have responded. I had the same problem and was given the same advice. This was 5 days ago. So far no further actions or response.

A far better option would be to "de-activate" the software if it is properly uninstalled .

Hopefully they will do this some time soon.

    Thanks

I am happy to report that I was advised by Avanquest that my serial number had been reset about 20 minutes after my previous post.

I really like PowerDesk having used it for the past 12 years or so. Now that I know that the serial can be reset my confidence in the product is restored.

Avanquest have a great product in PowerDesk - all that's required now is to tweak the customer service so that it's at the same level.

Step 1 - explain the process in the FAQs
step 2 - automate the revalidation process to take the stress off the customer service guys and gals

    Regards

"Have switched to XY Explorer http://www.xyplorer.com/ Not quite as good as PowerDesk but MUCH easier to deal with ..."

I have done the same thing as Cameron.  I believe I took advantage of a deal on XYplorer I saw here on Bits du Jour.  I am simply not going to buy individual licenses for all my computers of PowerDesk.  I am only one person and there is no possibility other people are using the program at the same time.  We live in an age where people have multiple computers -- home, office, laptop, notebook.  It's not reasonable to require licenses for all of them.  Fortunately, many software publishers recognize this reality.

A free alternative is FreeCommander.  Like XY, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of PowerDesk, but it's quite capable, easy to use and you can't beat the price!
